Lifehacker have just put up notice that XP SP3 is available a little early from some sites if you want to give it a try. Official release is probably sometime next week. From what I hear it's well worth installing.

I'm often asked about a nice script for automating exmerge for exchange. This creates pst backups of each mailbox for easy recovery. There are problems if a mailbox is over 2GB but I'll cover that another day.

For the moment create your exmerge user and give them the appropriate rights to the mail store. Then right click on exmerge and run as and use your desired settings, don't forget to click save settings at the end. THis saves your choices to the ini file.

After that create a batch file with the following text:

del D:\exmerge\old\*.pst
copy D:\exmerge\*.pst D:\exmerge\old\
C:
cd \
cd "Program Files"
cd Exchsrvr
cd BIN
EXMERGE -F EXMERGE.ini -B -D

And then create a recurring task using the above user with this batch file. It couldn't be simpler.

Well the two most interesting ones I've come across are:

Type G and then press enter in the address bar and it will open Gmail
Type Y and then press enter in the address bat and it will open Yahoo mail.

¹ In Windows, by default clicking the middle mouse button on a tab closes the tab. In Linux, a middle-click pastes the contents of the clipboard and attempts to load content by visiting the URL of the pasted content or by performing a search. If desired, you can change the Linux middle-click behavior. Set the middlemouse.contentLoadURL preference to either true (for the Content Load URL feature) or false (for closing the selected tab).

² By default, Ctrl+click opens the link in a background tab while you stay on the current one, and Shift+Ctrl+click opens the link in a foreground tab, which is presented to you. Gizmo at techsupportalert.com has combiled an excellent list of the top 46 free utilities. There is an extended version available to subscribers which is well worth looking at. There are a few other freeware links I use which I will post below at a later date but this is a good one to start with.

controlc.com creates a backup of everything you copy to the clipboard to a website. I've found it very handy to look back and find email addresses, links, phone numbers and even file names.

This is well worth a try. The free version stores info for 7 days and you can pay for unlimited history.

From their website:

What is ControlC? It's pretty simple actually. Have you ever copied something on a webpage or in an email that you later needed to look at again but couldn't remember where you saw it?

Have you ever copied a link to a webpage and couldn't for the life of you remember the link later on?

ControlC fixes that. Anytime you copy textual content, ControlC will upload that text to our server to store under your account. When the text is uploaded, it is encrypted using your password as the key (which we will never have access to). This has only recently been made available on public release. It gathers together all your friends sites in one. Not perfect yet but might save some time.

When Microsoft Office 2007 first came out it seems they hadn't reached a deal with Adobe over PDFs but the addon is now available for free. Simply download the update and you can save any document as a PDF.

Well Eircom have finaly upgraded some of their exchanges to ADSL2+. Press release below. You can see a list of the exchanges which are currently upgraded in the first link below. The main difference from this offering to Magnet is that Magnet are offering zero contention for the same price whereas there is no mention of contention from Eircom so in effect Magnet speeds may be 24 times faster in real terms...

eircom Introduces Higher Broadband Speeds

(Thursday, 31st January 2008) eircom today announced plans to significantly increase broadband speeds for broadband customers nationwide, through a combination of speed upgrades and new products. The changes also apply to all wholesale customers, enabling other operators to offer new broadband products to the Irish market. Retail broadband customers will continue to pay the same monthly fee and will receive the speed upgrades free of charge, while today’s announcement will provide lower wholesale broadband prices.

eircom will now offer broadband products with download speeds that range from 1Mb up to 12Mb per second. The speed upgrades and new products will be introduced on a phased basis over the coming months.

More than 240,000 wholesale and retail customers will now see their broadband download speeds increase. These speeds will range from 3Mb per second to up to 12Mb per second.

Customers currently availing of a 3Mb, 4Mb or a 6Mb product will see significant increases in downloads speeds which will at least double. They will be upgraded to 7.6Mb, 10Mb and 12Mb product respectively. Customers currently using a 2Mb product will be upgraded to a 3Mb product.

The dates for each of the changes are being finalised with rollout to customers between now and June.

Commenting on the announcement, Rex Comb, CEO, eircom said, "eircom is responding directly to customer needs and levels of broadband usage by introducing increased speeds. Customers are maximising the benefits of their broadband connection through the increased use of online applications such as video streaming, online gaming, music downloads and peer to peer applications. The introduction of these higher speeds benefits broadband users nationwide and is the next step in the rollout of eircom’s Next Generation Network".

I recently decided to print a photograph onto canvas to see how it would look. I looked at a few magazines and Photo-Canvas received the Digital Photo Magazine Gold Award so I decided that was a good place to start.

A 16"x12" photo cost me approximately 72 Euro and it was excellent quality and the customer service was superb. I promptly recommended them to a few Friends and I was pointed to a discussion on Boards.ie about the same topic. The main company under discussion was updone.com based in the US but prints seems to come from China. You can read the discussion your self but the end result is that while they aren't quite the same quality as Photo-Canvas you end up with a fully mounted gallery wrapped photo canvas for less than 30USD including shipping!

Some points to note. You can get stuck with import duty or VAT though these seem to only be about 20 USD and then only if your order is over 30 Euro. You can also save on the price by not having the canvas mounted. In a price comparison it's actually cheaper to get an A2 canvas without mounting than to get an A2 print from most Irish shops.

I'll post a more detailed review later but I thought this would get things going.

Well 2007 is over and I didn't add very much to this simply becasue I forgot it was here! Anyhow for 2008 I'm hoping to post about once every two weeks or at least once a month. I have a few good ideas which may interest people or which have been requested.
